Xian is the capital of Northwest China’s Shaanxi Province. Named Chang’an in ancient times, it served as the capital through 13 dynasties and the eastern end of the world-famous Silk Road. Xian is one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization and witnessed the prosperous centuries of ancient China.

Xian is home to the entombed life-size Terracotta Warriors and Horses. In the city, the impregnable City Wall, the treasure house of Shaanxi’s glamorous past – Shaanxi History Museum, the Muslim quarter, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda are worth a visit. If you have more days, hike on one of China’s Five Best-known Mountains Mt. Huashan, go west to Famen Temple where the finger bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha is stored and Qianling Mausoleum, the burial ground for China’s only female emperor and her husband. Hanyangling Museum is a newly developed tourist site where people can walk on glass walkways on the excavation sites.

The distance between Beijing and Xian is roughly 1200 to 1300 kilometers. Regular flights connect the two cities in 2 hours. By train, it takes around 12 hours single way. From Beijing to Xian, Beijing Explores usually arrange for clients a soft-sleeper on overnight Z53 (20:02-08:12), T43 (20:29-09:00) or Z19 (20:47-07:58). For the way back, we use T44 (19:00-08:12), Z54 (19:21-08:24) or Z20 (20:05-07:18).

Beijing-Xian-Beijing roundtrip by overnight train with a soft sleeper. The train duration is 11.5 to 13 hours.
