Fahai Temple and Tian Yi MU Fahai Temple was completed in 1443, and what sets Fahai Temple apart from other Buddhist temples are the 500-year-old frescoes, all 236sqm of them. When the temple was constructed, every hall had frescos; now, only those in Mahariva Hall (the main hall) survive. While Fahai Temple is not the only Chinese temple with frescoes, it has some of the most intricate and well-preserved frescoes in the country. Its colors have not faded away, even after over 500 years. Although created during the Ming dynasty, the frescoes were influenced by styles of the Song, Tang, and Ming dynasties. They are also exquisite examples of Ming-era perspective and brush technique. Without the jostling crowds found at Lama Temple or the Forbidden City, Fahai Temple is a serene retreat ideal for an early autumn day. Be sure to bring snacks and water (or better yet, a meal), since there are no vendors around. The little pagodas are the perfect locale for a picnic, too. Tian Yi Mu is about a 10-minute walk from Fahai Temple. Just head down the mountain road, take the first right at Moshikou Dajie, and walk about 300m. Tian Yi Mu can be tough to spot, so look for the gray archway on the right and head up the ramp that leads to the arch. Tian Yi, the favorite eunuch of the Emperor Wan Li, was buried here. Though it is known as Tian Yi?? tomb and memorial, there are four other eunuchs buried in the cemetery. Eunuchs have a long history in China. China?? last eunuch, Sun Yaoting, died in 1996. Back in the sixteenth century, Tian Yi himself was the directorate of ceremonies, the highest administrative office, and was the favorite eunuch of Ming dynasty Emperor Wanli. Tian Yi, Wanli?? mentor and confidant, served three emperors over 63 years. When Tian Yi died in 1605, Emperor Wanli had the tomb built to commemorate his much-loved eunuch. Though built on a smaller scale, its structure emulates that of Ming emperor tombs. One highlight is that visitors can actually go down into one of the tombs. When you head into the garden cemetery, you??l see a sliding metal door that leads into the ground. Slide it back, walk down the steps, and turn on the light. Down the steps, it is cold, wet, and dark, and the area remains unsupervised. This scene is not for everyone, but it is an adventure for some. Though both Fahai Temple and Tian Yi Mu are unconventional tourist sites, they are well worth a day trip.

Just a quick email to say that I had a lovely day been taken around the city, although touring alone it was a pleasure to immerse myself in some of the culture not to mention trying the yummy food! We visited Yu Garden which had such a variety of gift souvenir shops though I settled on a silk scarf for my wife. Later we toured the Bund and went up a Sky Scrapper to look over the city. The food was a rare treat, and I even ate Ducks Tongue! The guide David and the driver both were very pleasant people and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Thank you for organising this for me in such short notice.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 Beijing/Shanghai/Nanjing(D)

You are met at your hotel and transferred to the airport for the flight to Shanghai. Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by our local guide and board the 5 star US Victora ship.

Day 2 Nanjing (B/L/D)

Today you will tour the Sun Yat-sen Memorial where to commemorate the devotions of Sun Zhongshan, as a fantastic architecture in the shape of octangle. It’s not only the famous landmark with its magnificent appearance, but also can reflect the rich Chinese national culture. In the afternoon, you will stroll around the bazaar built in Qing Dynasty style around the Confucian Temple.

Day 3 Huangshan Trip (B/L/D)

Full day exciting excursion to Huangshan, one of China's top 10 scenic spots, covers an area of about 1,200 square km. Because of a mild climate, Huangshan Mountain shows all kinds of different scenery in four seasons. Specially shaped pines, grotesque shaped rocks, seas of clouds and hot springs are included "four major marvels", all of which are famous both inside and outside of China.

*We will visit Mt. Jiuhuashan instead if weather or road conditions are not very good.

Day 4 Wuhan (B/L/D)

In the evening excursion of Wuhan, you will visit Hubei Provincial Museum, which is one of the most famous museums with a large number of history and cultural relics. It has collected over 200,000 ancient relics, containing a set of ancient bronze bells, Sword of Goujian and a lot of artifacts from the tomb of Marquis Yi of Zeng.

Day 5 Yangtze River (B/L/D)

Full day sail on the Yangtze River enjoying the legend scenery! You can enjoy the vivid activities provided by the ship.

Day 6 Yangtze River (B/L/D)

This morning we will pass through Gezhou Dam while sailing on the river. It’s 2561 meters wide, 70 meters high, and has a wall thickness, of 30 meters. It’s regarded as the largest hydroelectric dam in China, controlling the volume of water corresponding to approximately half of the Yangtze’s total capacity. In the afternoon you will see the Three Gorges Dam Site, which is planned to be the largest hydroelectric project all over the world. All the original plan of the project and Six extra generators in the underground power plant are being set up, with the dam thus not expected to become fully operational until 2011. There are various kinds of economic benefits, just like flood control, clean hydroelectricity and navigation.

Day 7 Yangtze River (B/L/D)

Today, the cruise will past 2 of the famous 3 gorges:

Qutang Xia (Qutang Gorge), is not only the shortest (5 miles), but also the narrowest (500 feet), and most grand and precipitous among Changjiang River Three Gorges. The 25-mile long Wu Xia is also called Witches Gorge, flanked by cliffs so precipitous that the sun barely penetrates the cliff, as the most beautiful of the three gorges. In addition, you will take an excursion through the Daning River Small Gorges, 20 miles up the Daning River, regarded as a must stops along the Yangtze Three Gorges. Since the Daning River become narrower, the cliffs overhead seems to be more and more dramatic.

Day 8 Yangtze River (B/L/D)

This morning your wonderful trip start with Fengdu, also named ”Ghost City”, the only Ghost town in China. It is said there used to be the town of cemetery for Taoism, the people believed that the spirits and soul of the dead people gathered here and it was built 1700 years ago. The town is full of over 70 Tao and Buddha temples, enshrining status of ghosts and devils inside.

Day 9 Chongqing/Beijing (B)

You will disembark today. Your guide will meet you and transfer to the airport for your departure flight to Beijing. After arrival, make your own way back to hotel.
